Environmental Health & Safety Manager

Assist the Cape May GM and Director of Corporate EHS in maintaining and coordinating all plant environmental, health and safety program activities in compliance with the company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program and any governmental regulations by enforcing agencies such as OSHA, EPA, NFPA, etc.  Help coordinate and track paperwork from workers’ compensation claims and statistics.

  • Review, update and implement programs, policies, and procedures to achieve compliance with environmental, health, safety, fire safety, and security regulations in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Review and update the Hazard Communication Program. Ensure that accurate, current Safety Data Sheets are on file and readily available for all hazardous materials in the facility. Submit all right to know data yearly to the State of NJ.
  • Implement and monitor completion of monthly safety training. Conduct new hire and/or transfer employees (including agency temps) classroom safety orientation training. Maintain all environmental, Health and Safety training records current and organized.
  • Conducting work-related incidents/ accidents investigations, ensuring compliance on Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space Programs, and conduct yearly training.
  • Compile and report statistical data to Director Corporate EHS related to safety and security issues.
  • Regularly keep informed/updated about State and Federal safety or environmental related laws, rules, and regulations affecting the workplace.
  • Conduct workplace inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices
  • Assist Director Corporate EHS with developing, updating and maintaining the company’s safety incentive program. Planning and coordinating of safety celebrations, events, or other activities.
  • Lead the monthly safety inspections effort. Notify management and Director Corporate EHS of any necessary corrective actions.  Maintain inspection records, and input safety notifications into the SAP and incident management system for proper tracking.
  • Organizes and conducts monthly Safety Committee meetings & quarterly Safety RoundTable meetings.
  • Recommends changes to work conditions and procedures to improve the work environment and comply with all health and safety regulations.
  • Work with plant personnel to ensure compliance with all operational permits (i.e., water treatment and discharge systems.)
  • Remain current on any environmental regulations. Maintain regulatory agency permits.  Prepare any required reports.
  • Coordinates, monitors, and updates regulatory programs such as Storm Water Prevention, Spill Prevention and Containment, etc.

Other Duties

  • Perform accurate record keeping and gather statistics in compliance with governmental regulations and/or company needs, utilizing company computer and/or manual systems. Includes records of training drills, audit inspections, certifications, procedures, permits, communication with external agencies and any other documents required by governmental regulations.
  • Serve as an additional point-of-contact for external safety and/or environmental auditors/inspectors.  Participate in external audits/inspections in conjunction with the Director Corporate EHS.
  • Assist with contacting vendors to coordinate/arrange outside services related to environmental regulations and/or industrial hygiene, such as audiometric testing, thermographic testing, hazardous waste disposal, water testing, fire protection system services, etc.
  • Generation of weekly and monthly safety reports and forward to Director Corporate EHS for review.
  • Review, and update of written Job Safety Analysis for all positions, as necessary.
  • Periodic review and assessments of Personal Protective Equipment and make any necessary recommendations.
  • Assists with and/or serves as a backup to the HR department for workers compensation claims administration.
  • Translate safety documents from English into Spanish to ensure comprehension by the general workforce.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including safety rules and Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Maintains records and contracts perinate to the Safety department, & coordinates appropriate training (first aid, CPR, AED, work boots orders, etc.). Submits & renews all air, water, health, and associated permits for the facility.
  • Lead the security team and ensure food defense compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required PPE

Bump cap, hearing protection, hair net, beard net, gloves, slip resistant, steel toe shoes, eye protection, and any other PPE.

Food Defense Responsibilities

Engage in our “if you see something, say something” Food Defense Program. This will include any necessary training requirements upon hire, then annually. Employee must follow all aspects of the Food Defense Plan and have specific training in their area. Responsibilities to include the following.

  • Ensure that there are no chemicals and non-food grade lubricants or physical contaminants in the processing areas and report immediately to Supervisor if there is any infraction
  • Ensure that no personal belongings are stored in the processing areas and report immediately to Supervisor if there is any infraction
  • Report immediately to Supervisor if there are any suspicious activities or anything that seems not normal to you.
  • Ensure that employees, visitors, and contractors, are wearing the Company approved uniform and are following GMP and any other applicable Company policies. Report immediately to Supervisor if there is any infraction
  • Report immediately to Supervisor if there is any unescorted visitor or contractor seen in the processing area
  • Conduct food defense Mitigation Strategy Inspection(s) at Actionable Process Steps (upon relevant training), whenever assigned

Physical Requirements

  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.  Body agility is emphasized.  This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward bending spine at the waist.  This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.  Includes activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Ability to hear and comprehend verbal communication.  Requires frequent use of telephone.
  • Vision: Ability to see for frequent use of computer and working safely in a production environment.  Requires attention to detail when inspecting the plant.
  • Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

Degree of physical exertion required for the position

  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Environmental conditions the employee will be subject to in this position.  (Check ALL that apply.)

  • Inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes.
  • Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level.
  • Hazard: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

Education/ Experience/ Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and/or Occupational Health & Safety preferred
  • 5-7 years proven industrial safety experience
  • Prior experience in food manufacturing preferred. Canning facility a plus
  • Proficient knowledge of /OSHA General Industry Safety Orders and accident prevention programs
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance requirements/procedures
  • Ability to create training materials utilizing various multi-media
  • Experience with LMS and IMS Systems preferred
  • Proficient computer experience (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP etc.)
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus (able to read, write, and speak fluently in both languages)
