Sanitation Supervisor

PURPOSE
Provide leadership and supervision for the sanitation department. Supervise general sanitary maintenance of the plant and premises, ensuring compliance with established company standards and governmental regulations. Serve as a back-up to the Production Supervisor as needed.
DUTIES
The duties of this position are those described below. This job description does not state or imply that the duties listed are the only duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Employees holding this position will be required to perform any other job-related duties as requested by management.
Essential Duties: These duties directly and substantially serve to achieve the purpose of the position.
Safety Activities
- Promote, participate in, and fully support all safety program elements, directed towards achieving a goal of zero accidents, and leading the SFS plant to a “world class” level of safety performance. Activities include safety training, inspections, incident investigations, incentive programs, and any other safety-related activities.
- The incumbent will direct and/or ensure compliance with the following specific safety areas:
- Ensure all new hires, transfer employees, and/or agency temporary employees receive documented classroom training in the company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and “hands-on” job specific training in the department for which they are assigned before they begin actual work.
- Be able to answer any employee questions about the IIPP.
- Ensure all department employees attend monthly and other periodic general safety training and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) training sessions, and any other required safety training as scheduled.
- Ensure all hard copy safety training records and documents are filled out accurately and completely with supporting training materials as applicable. Ensure such documents are promptly delivered to the Human Resources department.
- Ensure department employees have and correctly use the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and/or any other safety equipment at all times.
- Ensure job tasks in the reporting departments are done following established safety rules and procedures, with the utmost regard for the health and safety of all personnel.
- Develop and foster proper safety attitudes of direct reports.
- Conduct daily and periodic safety inspections; solicit safety concerns, suggestions, and ideas from department employees. Promptly inform manager of any findings and suggested remediations. Promptly follow up to ensure remediation occurs.
- Responsible for evaluation and investigation of accidents/incidents and hazards.
- Ensure adherence to the company’s discipline policy, up to and including termination of employment for safety violations, in particular any violations for confined spaces, lockout/Tagout, machine guarding, working at heights, the operation of powered industrial trucks and/or violations of the Personnel Safety Procedures for the retort ovens.
- Create and/or participate in creating and/or updating Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for all positions in the reporting departments.
- Support company safety incentive and/or award programs and activities.
- Train all sanitation personnel in the proper use of cleaning chemicals, ensuring Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are read and understood, and that appropriate safety precautions relating to cleaning each piece of equipment and chemicals used are observed and followed.
Supervisory Responsibilities-Employee Support
- Supervise departmental personnel, ensuring they are compliant with company policies and
- Ensure all employees are treated fairly with courtesy and respect, and that company policies (i.e., attendance, discipline, vacation, leaves, etc.) are followed consistently.
- Orient, assist, and provide guidance and leadership to direct reports.
- Assure direct reports receive on-going training and education. Cross train employees to assure efficiencies are kept at optimum levels.
- Ensure the proper translations for Spanish-speaking only employees of all training materials and job descriptions, so that employees fully understand what is expected of them and all safety guidelines that must be followed.
- Schedule regular meetings with employees so they can be informed of future events and work schedules, and allow time for any feedback or questions.
- Schedule, monitor and approve employees’ work hours (including temporary, weekend and overtime work), and make necessary adjustments in the timekeeping system with assistance of HR personnel.
- Interview and hire new and/or transfer employees as needed.
- Establish daily priorities for personnel in departments of responsibility.
- Conduct annual performance reviews for employees in all departments of responsibility.
Plant Sanitation
- Monitor plant sanitation and ensure proper cleaning and sanitation of the plant facilities, premises, and processing equipment, in accordance with the Master Sanitation Schedule.
- Monitor and ensure the proper operation and maintenance of all sanitation equipment.
- Ensure proper storage and/or labeling of chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
- Conduct daily plant sanitation inspection prior to start-up of production.
- Monitor and ensure that the offices and bathrooms are properly cleaned by the outside contracted cleaning service.
- Purchase and maintain adequate inventory or sanitation chemicals and supplies.
- Ensure cleaning equipment and supplies are distributed properly and in working order.
- Assure proper retrieval and disposal of all waste products and empty chemical containers.
Other Duties
- Personally comply with all company policies and procedures including safety rules and Good Manufacturing Practices.
- Develop and implement a sanitation safety manual for training of all new hires in the department, and review annually with all sanitation employees.
- Assist the Production and Quality Control departments where necessary and coordinate any special projects.
- Responsible for ensuring the regular inspection, emptying, and cleaning of all insecticutors.
- Work closely with management to execute projects.
- Collaborate with and support other supervisors and lead persons to facilitate proper communication and teamwork across departments.
REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
- Hearing protection, hair net, beard net, slip resistant shoes with toe protection, bump cap, smock.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED
- B.S. Degree in Business Administration or related field preferred.
- Two to three years previous supervisory experience in food or related industry preferred.
- Five or more years previous Sanitation experience.
- Fully Bilingual in English and Spanish (read/write/speak).
- Computer literate in Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written); able to communicate with all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated “hands on” leadership skills.
- Able to handle multiple priorities.

The compensation for this role includes base salary and eligibility for an annual bonus based on company performance. All incentive plans are subject to change.
The salary range for this role is $56,238-$104,442 annually. *Compensation to commensurate with level of knowledge, education, skills, and experience applicable to the position.
