Manufacturing Maintenance Manager

PURPOSE

Provide leadership and supervision to 1st shift plant maintenance personnel consisting of electricians, seamer mechanics, label and tray mechanics, general mechanics, and utility operators,  with the objective to support plant operations and projects.

DUTIES

             Essential Duties:  These duties directly and substantially serve to achieve the purpose of the position.

Supervise Operating Maintenance Department         

  • Establish priorities, schedule teams, and provide guidance and leadership to maintenance personnel. Will also lead the weekly maintenance huddles.
  • Review work in progress of maintenance personnel.
  • Assure on-going training and education of maintenance crew.

 Operate Within Budget

  • Review daily and weekly Maintenance and Repair expenditures. Take corrective

action where necessary.

  • Establish, maintain, and review inventories of spare parts and equipment.
  • Assist Engineering Manager in preparing maintenance operating budget.
  • Operate within established budget.

Comply with Environment Regulations

  • Supervise proper operations of water treatment and discharge systems, with

complete understanding of chemical and water process flows related to food product wastewater.

  • Oversee boiler’s air emissions within permit limitation.
  • Work with Safety Manager to ensure compliance with all operational permits.
  • Be acquainted with and up-to-date on environmental regulations.

Utilities

Responsible for water, power, gas systems, including maintenance and usage efficiencies.

Safety Activities

  • Participate in, and support all safety program elements, directed towards meeting the plant’s TIR (Total Incident Rate) goal established each year by Corporate. This includes safety training, inspections/audits, incident investigations, incentive programs, and any other safety-related activities.

 

Capital Budget and Engineering

  • Assist in the planning and cost estimates for the annual and longer term capital budgets.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager in executing capital plan on time and within budget approvals. This includes, but is not limited to, all engineering design and project management, working with both internal and external resources.

Other Duties

  • Work with chemicals when demonstrating the correct use to department personnel.
  • Understand the operation of all equipment and machinery within the department.
  • Regularly use CADD and MSOffice computer programs.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including safety rules and Good Manufacturing Practices.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related technical field.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a manager role in a food plant, managing maintenance teams
  • Complete understanding of PLC and logic controls for high speed operating equipment.
  • Proficient in CADD and computer literate in MS Office computer programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience in managing the work order life cycle of a manufacturing plant.
  • A well-rounded engineer with experience in electrical and mechanical, preferably on seaming, packaging equipment and utility systems operations.

 

 

 

Boiler Operator

To provide adequate maintenance to keep equipment uptime and efficiency at 85% (as a minimum) of boilers, refrigeration, ammonia, water (including cooling towers), waste water, compressed air, gas and steam systems, general production, utilities and facilities related equipment to efficiently meet quality standards and production daily requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for performing job tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Efficiently operates and maintains boilers, refrigeration, hydraulic, wastewater, water recirculation, cooling towers, and compressed air, gas and steam systems in a good and constant operating condition.
  • Records utilities meter readings, issues, completed activities and important information in the daily log book.
  • Properly maintains emergency generator and regularly completes emergency generator log.
  • Operates, lubricates, inspects and maintains utilities pumps in good condition.
  • Initiates production and facility equipment for daily plant production startup.
  • Knowledgeable about chemical dosages, their application, and responsible for keeping an updated chemical usage log.
  • Operates sewage treatment to be within prescribed limitations.
  • Inspects and maintains water discharge meters, and oversees maintenance of readings.
  • Knowledgeable of state and federal regulations for operation of utilities equipment.
  • Properly lubricates equipment, bearings and gearboxes.
  • Promptly attends to a breakdown or malfunction.
  • May perform some pipe fitting and welding for various metals and materials.
  • Responsible for maintaining equipment parts, tools, oil/grease barrels clean, orderly and stored in the right locations.
  • Installs new equipment as required.
  • Works from manufacturer’s manuals and specifications to keep equipment and machinery in proper working condition.
  • Works closely with the Central Parts Clerk to assure all critical and spare parts for the equipment are readily available.
  • Ensure that all parts obtained from the storage room are properly documented in order to avoid discrepancies during cycle counts.
  • Ensures the preventive maintenance (PM) program is followed and tasks are completed as scheduled.
  • Ensures all preventive and corrective maintenance activities are properly documented.
  • Ensures that a good working relationship with other areas and the entire maintenance team is maintained.
  • Reports the status of activities, in a written and verbal manner on a daily basis.

Other Duties

  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including safety policies, procedures and rules, and Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Supports disassembly and assembly of fillers for sanitation personnel, when needed.
  • Supports maintenance and repairs for general production, utilities, and facility equipment.
  • Supports training of new maintenance utilities operator employees (or cross-training of other department employees).
  • Cleans boilers for annual inspections.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Unlimited Steam Certification valid and current
  • Education transcripts

Director, Corporate Engineering Operations

Purpose

Oversees corporate engineering, all factory capital expenditures, and supports factory engineering for our 4 locations in San Diego, CA, Santa Fe Springs, CA, Cape May, NJ and Blacks Harbor, NB Canada. Additional work as needed to support Bumble Bee subsidiaries, co-packers, and special projects. The Director of Engineering will provide leadership on major cross functional projects, help develop company asset strategies, and drive process improvement and automation which will result in improved efficiencies and reduced operating costs. Accountabilities encompass all manufacturing operations. The Director of Engineering will be based in Santa Fe Springs, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Work with factory General Managers and Engineering Managers to align priorities with capital spend, asset strategies, safety, continuous improvement, downtime reduction, and automation
  • Support corporate initiatives involving innovation, optimization, sustainability, and QA
  • Manage the Company’s capital expenditure budget and ensure that capital projects are properly prepared and submitted on a timely basis.  Actively participate in project implementation and timely completion. Participate in a project closing process and post close audit.
  • Provide input into 3-5 year Capital Plan based on business objectives and initiatives
  • Solve technical issues and lead root cause teams. Gather relevant criteria, analyze and propose strategic business initiatives & solutions.
  • Establish corporate guidelines for spare parts and MRO items – work as corporate liaison to ensure consistency and standardization of suppliers where possible. Seek opportunities for corporate bids.
  • Responsible for cross-functional project leadership with ownership of processes, budgets, and timelines and making any necessary adjustments in order to ensure successful project completion
  • Manage all aspects of project planning & execution including RFPs, issuing technical specifications, management of vendors, installation, and factory acceptance testing
  • Partner with Corporate Sustainability group to ensure plant projects are aligned with Corporate sustainability goals. Execute projects that align with Seafood Love & Seafood Future Initiatives.

Qualifications

  • BS/MS degree in engineering or technical field
  • Minimum 15 years experience in a manufacturing environment and applicable experience in technical, operations or engineering positions is required
  • Lean Six Sigma certification (Green Belt Minimum) – Experience implementing process improvement

EHS Manager

Manage all aspects of EHS programs and report status to GM and the Director, Corporate EHS. Maintain and coordinate all plant environmental, health and safety program activities in compliance with the company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program and any government regulations by enforcing agencies such as CalOSHA, EPA, NFPA, etc. Help coordinate and track paperwork from workers’ compensation claims and statistics.

  • Manager review, update and implement programs, policies and procedures to achieve compliance with environmental, health, safety, fire safety and security regulations.
  • Manage and supervise security team members and ensure proper management and compliance with post orders, perimeter inspections and visitor/contractor management.
  • Manage review, and update all occupational health and safety training programs to provide specific instruction with respect to hazards specific to each employee’s job assignment, and general safety instruction, in compliance with the company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program requirements. Conduct any specialized training as needed.
  • Manage and review and update the Hazard Communication Program. Ensure that accurate, current Safety Data Sheets are on file and readily available for all hazardous materials in the facility.
  • Ensure required monthly safety training occurs on a timely basis. Ensure management team and line supervisors have safety material information and provide guidance as needed.
  • Assist when required with new hire and/or transfer employees (including agency temps) classroom safety orientation training for all departments.
  • Maintain all environmental, Health and Safety training records current and organized.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance on Lockout/Tagout and Confined Space Programs, with the assistance of Director, Corporate EHS.
  • Regularly keep informed/updated about State and Federal safety or environmental related laws, rules, and regulations affecting the work place.
  • With assistance of Director, Corporate EHS assure implementation and coordination of programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries.
  • Compile and report statistical data related to safety and security issues to GM and Director, Corporate EHS
  • Under the guidance of the Director, Corporate EHS conduct detailed investigations on all work-related accidents/injuries and provide the necessary information to the insurance carrier and company management.
  • Conduct workplace inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices
  • Under the direction of GM develop, update and maintain the company’s safety incentive program. Planning and coordinating of safety celebrations, events or other activities.
  • Lead the monthly safety inspections effort. Notify GM and Director, Corporate EHS of any necessary corrective actions. Maintain inspection records, and input safety notifications into the SAP and UL Pure Safety system for proper tracking.
  • Be the chairperson of the monthly safety committee meetings; as well as preparing and distributing written minutes timely.
  • Recommends changes to work conditions and procedures to improve the work environment and comply with all health and safety regulations.
  • Work with plant personnel to ensure compliance with all operational permits (i.e., water treatment and discharge systems.)
  • Remain current on any environmental regulations. Maintain regulatory agency permits. Prepare any required reports.
  • Coordinates, monitors and updates regulatory programs such as Cal-ARP, Process Safety Management, Storm Water Prevention, Spill Prevention and Containment, etc.

Other Duties

  • Perform accurate record keeping and gather statistics in compliance with governmental regulations and/or company needs, utilizing company computer and/or manual systems. Includes records of training drills, audit inspections, certifications, procedures, permits, communication with external agencies and any other documents required by governmental regulations.
  • Serve as an additional point-of-contact for external safety and/or environmental auditors/inspectors. Participate in external audits/inspections in conjunction with the Director, Corporate EHS.
  • Assist with contacting vendors to coordinate/arrange outside services related to environmental regulations and/or industrial hygiene, such as audiometric testing, thermographic testing, hazardous waste disposal, water testing, fire protection system services, etc.
  • Assist with generation of weekly and monthly safety reports and forward to Director, Corporate EHS for review.
  • Assist with review, and updates of written Job Safety Analysis for all positions, as necessary.
  • Assist with periodic .reviews and assessments of Personal Protective Equipment and make any necessary recommendations.
  • Assists with and/or serves as a backup to the HR department for workers compensation claims administration.
  • Translate safety documents from English into Spanish to ensure comprehension by the general workforce.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including safety rules and Good Manufacturing Practices.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Engineering discipline and/or Occupational Health & Safety preferred
  • 5-7 years proven industrial safety experience.
  • Food manufacturing experience preferred
  • Proficient knowledge of Cal/OSHA General Industry Safety Orders and accident prevention programs.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance requirements/procedures.
  • Ability to create training materials utilizing various multi-media.
  • Experience with LMS and IMS Systems preferred.

Electro-Mechanic Technician

Take a role in instituting profitable new electric technologies in a safe manner.

a. Work with supervisor and/or department manager in prioritizing activities and projects. Follows the instructions to complete required work and assignments (scheduled or non-scheduled) in a safe, timely, and efficient manner. Keeps Supervisor informed of activities status on a daily basis.

b. Maintain and document all non-Edison electrical distribution panels, MCC panels, and all pushbutton stations in clean and working order.

c. Utilize the retort log to document, maintain and calibrate the retort instrumentation.

d. Promptly attends to breakdowns and/or malfunctions.

e. Troubleshoot and repair motors (480VAC to 24VDC), control systems, sensors, relays, starters, timers, level controllers, RTD’s etc. add this: Trouble shoot and program servo-drives.

f. Provide diagnostics, calibrations and repair of equipment and equipment components which includes but is not limited to: heating, ventilation, air conditioning equipment, manufacturing equipment, pumps, piping, retorts, busse systems, vessels, plumbing components and facility equipment and building and grounds. Also includes, but is not limited to, tasks such as:

1. Properly lubricate equipment, bearings, and gearboxes.

2. Check belts, rollers, gears, sprockets, chains etc. for wear and replace/repair prior to failure.

3. Rebuild pumps, valves, gearboxes as needed.

4. Perform pipe fitting and welding for various metals and materials.

5. Repair and/or fabrication of guards, guides, rails, etc. as required.

6. Perform general facility repairs such as plumbing, doors, walls, floors, roof, ceilings, etc.

g. Design and fabricate electrical panels.

h. Install new equipment to current electrical system.

i. Bend and install conduit and run conductors.

j. Utilize Programmable Logic Controllers, computer, drawings, schematics and layouts to perform duties.

k. Maintain the control and instrumentation systems, troubleshoots and repairs all related control issues.

l. Perform preventive maintenance of critical plant and support equipment on a regular basis and properly document for maintenance records.

m. Provide support to technicians with other areas of expertise to troubleshoot simple and complex equipment problems.

n. Responsible for selecting and utilizing the proper tools, and for planning and performing job tasks in a safe and efficient manner.

WORK EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

Minimum 3 years as a plant electrician preferred.
Proficient in PLC programming.
Ability to draw read and understand blueprints.

Packing General

These duties directly and substantially serve to achieve the purpose of the position. Duties involve working in the Thawing area, Patching, Filler and quality under general supervision.

Thawed Loin Handling includes:

  • Remove thawed fish loins from racks and place onto conveyor.
  • Remove any loins that are not sufficiently thawed; place in rack for further thawing.
  • Using a knife, cut open loin bags in the instructed manner.
  • Using elevated packing area catwalk, un-jam empty can lines as needed.

Patching:

  • Remove any dented or empty cans from patcher table.
  • Manually put fish into cans that are underweight; replenish/circulate fish supply for this purpose within appropriate time frame.
  • Stop packing line at any time if problems occur (i.e., foreign material in the product); clear cans from the line as needed.

Filler Quality Operations:

  • Advise Rack Controller if fish temperature is out of range (i.e., too soft or still frozen), based upon touch and/or results of thermometer readings.
  • Remove bags from the loins, ensuring no plastic pieces remain on the fish; discard bag in appropriate container.
  • Place loins into filler machine channel, checking for, and removing any cleaning defects such as bones and scales, pieces of plastic, or other foreign material.
  • Identify off-color and/or decomposed loins, remove them from the packing line, and immediately notify Leadsperson, supervisor, and/or quality assurance personnel.
  • Assure the filler machine is properly fed without any voids or unnecessary breakage of loins. Fill any voids created by uneven loins.
  • Operate control panel for the filler machine conveyor.
  • Identify the quality of the fish (i.e., soft, oily, high moisture) and adjust filler speed accordingly.
  • Minimize rework required by patching through careful observation and recognition of line quality concerns, with immediate notification to proper personnel.
  • Understands the speed of the filler (cans per minute) and its impact on fish quality and filler operation. Notifies mechanic to make proper adjustments as needed.

Seamer Operations:

  • Need the seamer machine with lids to maintain a constant flow when canning.
  • Operate control panel on the seamer machine.
  • Inspect all lids for any defects and advise the lead person or supervisor when any defects are found.
  • Inventory all lids at the end of a production shift.
  • Observe the cans exiting the filler to ensure they are properly filled with broth/water, before they enter the seamer machines.

Additionally:

  • Assist in other production departments as assigned.
  • Keep work area clean.
  • May periodically attend product cuttings to view the results of the filler operation.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety rules and Good Manufacturing Practices.

Education and Experience:

  • Highschool or equivalent.

Sanitation Supervisor

Responsibilities Include:

  • Coordinating and preparing the plant audit (SQF) ready every day
  • Assuring cleaning procedures are maintained & updated as needed throughout the year
  • Must display excellent employee communication skills and be able to conduct various types of departmental training. e. Safety, Chemical and GMP
  • Plan cleaning schedules and ensure allocation of cleaning resources are maintained
  • Conduct inspections (Safety, Food Safety, GMP) and validation verification
  • Assuring Quality and Sanitation inventory levels are managed to meet targets without impeding plant objectives

Requirements:

  • High School education or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years food industry experience in a food processing facility with standard food equipment
  • Sanitation and supervisory experience and proven ability to effectively manage people
  • Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Flexible to work second shift and occasional first shift on production down day
  • Knowledge of chemical usage and safety and h3 problem-solving ability

Sanitation Worker I

PURPOSE

Responsible for detailed cleaning and upkeep of the plant, insuring that all equipment is properly cleaned and sanitized, ready for processing.  Also assists the Production Department as needed.

DUTIES

Essential Duties: These duties directly and substantially serve to achieve the purpose of the position.

    1. Clean walls, sinks, commodes. Empty all trash containers, refill toilet paper, hand towels and soap dispensers in wash rooms located in the production area and all other areas of the facility.
    2. Remove all empty loin bags and place inside baler.
    3. Sweep, mop, clean tables and remove trash from the Employee’s lunch room.
    4. Sweep and clean outside eating area twice per shift, ensuring trash is removed from all containers that are over 1/2 full.
    5. Do a general cleanup of all packing room floor areas and insure removal of all trash.
    6. Remove reusable cans from the patcher areas on the packing lines, rinse them, and return to the depalletizer for re-use.
    7. Remove unreusable cans from the patcher areas on the packaging lines and place in trash can.
    8. Clean around the trash compactor/dumpster and can baler and hose the area down.
    9. Sweep all parking lots, including the back of the plant, and empty/remove all trash.
    10. Clean and sweep the receiving docks.
    11. Clean and sweep around the labelers and dumpers
    12. Clean the drains located across from and under the dumpster.
    13. Sweep and remove trash from the entire Label & Tray area.
    14. Clean and sweep the Quality Control cutting room and warehouse office, and remove trash from both areas.
    15. Ensure that all chemicals are properly stored and labeled.
    16. Pack into bales the excess, unused, or discarded cardboard in the Cluster Pack area using the automatic baling machine.
    17. Empty and clean insecticutors.
    18. Lock Out Tag Out training.
    19. Remove all Patcher cans from production line containers: wash them, and take them to the depalitizer area for reuse. (thorough knowledge of can washer
