Transparency in Seafood Traceability Remains a Priority for the Seafood Company
SAN DIEGO (June 8, 2017) – Bumble Bee Seafoods, North America’s premium seafood company, applauds the efforts of the seafood industry as it announces the Tuna 2020 Traceability Declaration at the United Nations Ocean Conference, taking place this week in New York.
“Sustainability has always been at the very core of our business at Bumble Bee and we’re pleased to see so many leaders in the industry focused on improving their traceability efforts as a result of the Tuna Traceability Declaration,” said Chris Lischewski, Bumble Bee president and CEO. “As the world’s population grows over time, it’s a priority for the entire seafood industry to work as one to ensure our oceans are preserved for future generations.”
Bumble Bee is proud to have been at the forefront of the tuna traceability initiative that addresses sustainability within the industry, having launched its own consumer-facing traceability program, Trace My Catch, in 2015. Aiming to educate consumers, Trace My Catch highlights the path seafood takes in order to get from the ocean to consumers’ plates. Bumble Bee’s traceability program has recently expanded from tuna products to the company’s portfolio of salmon, sardines and clams.
“Today’s consumer is taking an active interest in where their food comes from,” said Lischewski. “Given the demand for sourcing information, consumers, companies and other stakeholders are collectively advocating for the long-term sustainability of our ocean’s resources. While we have had the ability to effectively trace our products for decades for food safety purposes, we’ve been one of the first to use this data to create a user-friendly tool that educates and offers consumers transparency when it comes to the seafood on their plates.”
Consumers can visit www.BumbleBee.com/TraceMyCatch, enter the production codes found on the bottom of cans or back of pouches, and view the results on Bumble Bee’s visual and interactive Trace My Catch site. The site shares details specific to the product, including species and a variety of other pertinent information. For example, when entering a code found on a can of tuna, consumers will receive details about the species, fishing method, ocean of catch, vessel names and flag of vessel registration, fishing trip dates and processing location.
